HEN is a puppet character, an exuberant and outrageous diva in heels, playing with stereotypical masculine and feminine imagery, transforms with sarcasm and insolence at whim, and sings as though in Bjork’s dream or Brigitte Fontaine’s wreaths of smoke.

HEN is a gender-neutral pronoun which entered the Swedish dictionary in 2015. It refers to a person or object without pointing out their gender (he/she) and is often used in school textbooks in order to avoid any form of gender discrimination.
HEN is the name of a hybrid character imbued with sarcasm and insolence who can transform its body at will, playing with stereotypical masculine and feminine imagery. A puppet manipulated in full view by two actors, HEN is a larger-than-life exuberant and outrageous diva, ever virile in heels, singing about love, hope, bodies and sexuality with absolute freedom.
Johanny Bert’s new creation is the result of a long-term research questioning identity and gender, as well as the origins of subversive puppet theatre. This off-the-wall cabaret freely takes its roots in Berlin’s 1930s cabaret era as well as in the contemporary queer performance scene.
Both a concert and a musical narrative, HEN is accompanied by two electro-acoustic musicians playing original creations onstage.
Théâtre de Romette and its artistic director Johanny Bert have created all their new productions in the state Auvergne Rhône Alpes in France. The company moved to Clermont-Ferrand in 2016 and tours in France and abroad with its productions. From 2016 to 2018, Johanny Bert was associate artist at the Scène Nationale theatre in Clermont-Ferrand, where he directed Emmanuelle Laborit in “Dévaste-Moi” (Destroy Me). Each new production is a fresh experiment and an encounter with other artists. Johanny Bert is not looking for a fixed form or aesthetic, instead he works on hybrid, freely intuitive forms and mixes disciplines to serve his purposes. As an object, the puppet is often depicted as a musical instrument to be played, a prosthetic extension that opens dramaturgy up to the discovery of a language that is constantly being rebuilt. Each show embodies new research and is in continual dialogue with writing and often with contemporary authors.
Johanny Bert’s new productions include "L’Opéra du Dragon" (The Dragon Opera) by Heiner Müller, "Waste" by Guillaume Poix, "Elle pas Princesse, Lui pas Héros" (She no Princess, He no Hero), a show commissioned from Magali Mougel, and "Le Petit Bain" (The Little Bath) created in collaboration with Yan Raballand. Since September 2018, Johanny is an Associated Artist at the Bateau Feu - Scène Nationale theatre in Dunkirk. He is currently preparing a contemporary saga with five authors for 2020. It will invite a family audience to spend a full day at the theatre.
Le Théâtre de Romette is supported by the DRAC Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, by the state Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and by the city of Clermont-Ferrand.

Johanny Bert is a hybrid artist. He has developed a unique sensitive and personal theatrical language through his encounters with others and his creative work, in which he often confronts the actor with an object in puppet form. He regularly works with other artists, dancers, musicians, composers, plastic artists, as well as directing productions for other companies.
Recently, he recreated “She no Princess, He no Hero” in New York with two American actors at the FIAF - a translation of Magali Mougel’s show “Elle pas princesse, Lui pas héros”. He also premiered an art video “A place of one’s own” on the construction site of the future Scène Nationale theatre at Clermont-Ferrand.
